The SEN Teaching Assistant Job

  • We are looking for a Special School Teaching Assistant to provide support to pupils with a range of additional needs including learning difficulties and physical disabilities at a very highly regarded special school in the London Borough of Wandsworth.
  • The role is to support the whole school and the successful applicant will initially be given an opportunity to specialise in one curriculum pathway (Early Years, Sensory, Semi-formal or Formal).
  • This will be a long term placement on a timesheet basis to start with but the school use this as a stepping stone for permanent recruitment as this works well for both the school and new applicants.
  • This is a full time position working Monday - Friday 08:30-4, part time applicants will not be considered and working hours are not flexible as consistency and continuity is vital for the pupil's in terms of both their academic progress and emotional well-being.

The SEN Teaching Assistant Role

  • The role is responsible under the instruction or guidance of a teacher or class lead, to undertake work, care or support programmes with individual pupils and with groups.
  • You will be working in an outstanding Wandsworth Local Authority primary special school for children aged 2 - 11 years who may have severe physical disabilities, communication and learning difficulties.
  • Many of the children have additional complex medical needs, there is a growing cohort of pupils who have Autism and additional needs.
  • The teaching assistant duties will include attending to the pupils individual care needs, (such as feeding, toileting and some medical procedures) and supporting the classroom teacher in delivering the curriculum focussed activities.
  • The successful teaching assistant applicant will also work closely with the Therapy team with the integrated therapy programmes put in place for each pupil.
  • You will need to have a good level of IT skills for both supporting the pupils and to access the wider school communication platforms.

The Teaching Assistant Applicant

  • A commitment to the children and their complex needs is essential
  • The ability to work as part of a team.
  • Experience working with special needs children in either an education or care setting in the UK would be advantageous
  • A 'can do' attitude and a sense of humour are essential in this line of work
  • Willingness to help pupils with personal care and medical needs are essential so experience in this area would be a bonus
